Julia Laue, FAIA, LEED AP, NCARB
Personal Background
From her early beginnings as a toddler running around a construction site at the non-profit Community Theater her parents were building to being the only woman in her high school architectural drafting class to swinging a hammer on construction sites in college, it feels like Julia was always meant to be an Architect. And it is in San Francisco, a city she has always loved and planned to move to right after college, where she found her home and passion for excellence. Her entire career has brought her to where she is now, as the first woman Principal Architect & Bureau Manager for the Bureau of Architecture (BOA) in San Francisco, an organization well over 110 years old and steeped in San Francisco history.
Julia’s overall career experience prior to BOA ranged from small scale residential design, multi-family housing, urban mix-use projects (Santana Row in San Jose), healthcare, and hospitality. It was in 2013, after 28 years in the private sector, when Julia joined BOA, where she now oversees an architectural staff of 68+. BOA delivers hundreds of building & renovation projects of all types for the Communities and Neighborhoods of San Francisco. These projects range from Neighborhood Branch Libraries, Fire Stations, Civic Auditoriums, Community & Rec Centers, Navigation Centers for the Homeless, Neighborhood Healthcare Clinics and more recently, the SF Animal Care & Control Center. BOA’s current portfolio includes over 165 projects with budgets totaling over $1.2B. Her goal has always been to inspire cultural and strategic change, raising the bar in design and technical execution on all the projects and organizations she works with. Project delivery through great design and excellence in execution is Julia’s passion.
